Esslingen [ENA] Lightweight construction concepts continue to gain ground in the automotive industry – each gram less is an active contribution towards reducing CO2. Eberspaecher is helping car manufacturers to reduce weight with intelligent lightweight construction technology.

At International Motor Show (Hall 8, Booth A 33) the Esslingen automotive supplier will present groundbreaking new concepts. "In future, a combination of various aspects will ensure progress in the lightweight construction of the exhaust system – alongside completely new conceptual approaches, these will also include a reduction in wall thickness of the materials employed and the use of alternative materials”, says Thomas Nording, Head of the Eberspaecher Exhaust Technology Center of Competence. At IAA Cars, the leading international company will be showing new study prototypes on this subject and series products which have already been introduced successfully.

Groundbreaking concept in compact design

One highlight is the study prototype of a compact exhaust system for front engines. All functional units are housed in the engine compartment. Some years ago, Eberspaecher produced a comparable system for small cars with rear engines and set new standards when it came to reducing construction size. Now, the Esslingen-based innovation leader has also implemented this concept for front engines. The key is the space and material-saving installation of the system. As the functions are concentrated in one component, there are no long connecting pipes running under the underfloor of the vehicle.

Innovative approach for downsizing engines and plug-in hybri

The compact exhaust system is particularly suitable for use in downsizing concepts with three and four-cylinder engines. Due to the reduced number of cylinders it can be integrated simply in the otherwise overcrowded engine compartment. The new exhaust system also offers decisive advantages for alternative drive concepts such as plug-in hybrids. As the exhaust pipe is not blocking the space in the underfloor, valuable installation room is freed up for the battery or for induction loops for cable-free supercharging.

IAA 2011: Trend-setting materials open new horizons

In addition, at IAA Cars Eberspaecher will show how the weight of an exhaust system can be significantly reduced by the use of innovative, light materials. Using the example of ActiveSilence®, the developers have explored various options: as the exhaust gas does not flow directly through the actuator, it is also possible to use materials that are less temperature stable. Alongside the standard version in steel, Eberspaecher will show a plastic version with a weight saving of 35 percent (in relation to the housing). Furthermore, the company will present study prototypes made of aluminum (37 percent weight saving), titanium (26 percent weight saving) and carbon with a 40 percent reduction in weight – the peak value.
